A Japanese martial art without competitions
that aims to transform conflict into harmony
What comes to mind when you hear martial arts? Fighting, punches, winning?*
Aikido taught me something different.
I started Aikido to build physical self-confidence.
But what kept me coming back was discovering that the principles on the mat
helped me navigate with ease the unexpected in everyday life:
conflict, uncertainty, pressure, and change.
I’m Marina Velikova. Welcome to step into my journey. . .
Three Aikido-inspired Steps to
Meet the Unexpected with Ease

From reacting to being present: noticing thoughts en emotions instead of getting lost in them, everywhere - from traffic to meetings
Calm body, clear response: dropping shoulders, straight posture, breathing, staying steady when something sudden happens
Ease in daily moments: cycling in cold weather or walking through a busy space (e.g., shop) becomes relaxed and easy, instead of rushed
Less tension, more space: when I am calm, people around me move more naturally too and situations unfold with ease

From judgment to openness for the unknown: seeing people and situations as information or energy, not threats to my identity, even when they feel unexpected or challenging. When meeting new people or entering new places, I remind myself "Any opinion or behaviour is possible. Don’t judge. Stay open." From that space I find more calm, clarity, and unexpected possibilities
Pause & receive before reacting: in traffic, disagreement, or surprise moments, I don’t close down but ask: "What is actually happening?"
Receiving in action: staying steady when someone cut into my life 'lane,' allowing the situation to unfold without panic or rush

Redirecting the failure: this webpage grew out of a cancelled collaboration and a delayed meeting with me, when I turned disappointment into an unexpected opportunity to create.
From comfort zones to inner safety: instead of staying in a familiar “like-minded bubbles,” I create safety within myself and step into new diverse places, experiences, and people that broaden my horizons
From resistance to flow with trust: instead of waiting for perfect conditions or a full map, I step into situations, stay flexible, and I find my way while moving
12 Hidden Gifts of Aikido
Learning to soften your body and breathe when the unexpected hits, replacing instant anger or panic with calm.
Shifting from a defensive "fight-or-flight" mindset to a calm, objective response during verbal/physical confrontations.
Quieting the background noise of past regrets and future anxieties to handle exactly what is in front of you.
Learning how to fall safely and discovering that hitting the ground isn't a failure—it’s just preparation for standing right back up with grace.
Learning how to protect yourself - physically, mentally and emotionally - without needing to harm or diminish the other person.
Moving with a sense of alignment, grace, and quiet confidence that changes how people perceive and treat you before you even say a word.
Swapping the fear of uncertainty for a deep, childlike curiosity about what happens next.
Re-learning how to approach complex life challenges not as rigid problems, but as dynamic games to be played.
Stripping away corporate titles, degrees, and egos to connect with others on a purely human level.
Discovering that letting go of the desperate need to control an outcome is often where your true strength lies and the fastest way to gain a true advantage.
Cultivating a stable, quiet inner center that stays balanced even when the environment around you is spinning.
Staying physically relaxed and present when receiving harsh attack (e.g., criticism), instead of locking up inside.

WALK LIKE A WARRIOR, LIVE LIKE A HUMAN BEING
Forehead high. Straight back. Relaxed body. No matter what it takes.
Martial arts is not a sport. They're not therapy either. It's a lifestyle.
A concrete way to face what’s holding you back — inside and out — without losing shape, without bowing your head, and without making excuses.
Training isn't just about moving. It is learning to respond when you want to give up, to fall without breaking and to get up without anyone having to applaud you.
Every technique you repeat is a lesson on yourself. Every uke that projects at you shows you where fear creeps in. And every day you go to the dojo — even if you're tired, frustrated or don't want to — you're telling the world, without words: I won't let myself down.
It's not about winning. It's all about not breaking down. To be polished. To be in axis when it would be easy to shout, run away or blame someone else.
And when it all seems uphill...
Back to basics: forehead up, back straight, body relaxed.
And one more step. No complaints.
